Typhoid vaccine helps protect against typhoid fever in adults and children who are at least 6 years old.
Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella typhi bacteria which is acquired via ingestion of contaminated food or water. Symptoms of typhoid fever are high fever, fatigue, weakness, stomach pain, headache, loss of appetite, and rash.
This vaccine is recommended for people who are travelling to countries where there is a risk of catching typhoid fever or people living in countries where there is a risk of catching typhoid fever.
Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Typhoid vaccine is available in capsule form.
Take it on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before a meal. Swallow it whole as soon as possible after placing it in your mouth. Do not chew or crush the capsule. The capsule should be taken with a cold or lukewarm beverage.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Do not take this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Typhoid vaccine.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- a very weak immune system
- acute severe febrile illness (a rapid onset of fever and symptoms such as headache, chills or muscle and joint pains)
as Typhoid vaccine may not be suitable for you.
Do not give this medicine to children younger than 6 years of age.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- moderate or severe illness (with or without fever)
- bleeding disorders
- persistent diarrhoea or vomiting
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Notify your doctor if you are planning to have other vaccinations.
Typhoid vaccine may cause any of the following side effects: headache, fever, fainting, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and skin rash.
If you develop signs and symptoms of allergic reactions (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes), stop the medicine and alert your doctor immediately.
Inform the doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Typhoid vaccine until at least 3 days after taking antibiotics.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicine for malaria e.g. chloroquine, proguanil
- medicines used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. azathioprine, belimumab
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in the refrigerator, between 2-8 °C. Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, this medicine will become ineffective and should not be used.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
